PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR SENIORS
I support measures that will give real property tax relief to all home owners. These measures have merit as far as they go. It is my hope and desire that the legislature eliminate property taxes for those 70 years of age and older on their primary residence. I would like these senior citizens to continue to pay for their fire protection.
Too many seniors on fixed incomes are having to make tough economic decisions. Too many senior citizens are having to obtain reverse mortgages just to be able to stay in a home where so many memories have been made in their lives. The tax creep continues to show up at their door and demand more tax revenue for the state. But does their social security go up at the same rate? Does Medicare or Medicaid go up at the same rate?
Before you write this tax relief plan off as pie in the sky, let me point out that the state makes more off of sales tax than they do off of property tax revenue. If an individual approaching retirement in another state (say California) were looking for a more affordable state to reside in after retirement, I think such an individual would be more likely to consider Nevada for retirement since we have no state income tax and with the added incentive of no property tax to pay after the age of 70, such an individual might be greatly inclined to move to Nevada. Not only would this help our state move some of our housing inventory, but these older citizens would shop in our malls, our stores, our restaurants and our state sale tax revenues would increase. Being retired these citizens would not be taking jobs but making jobs for other Nevadans.
As your assemblyman for District 32, I would offer a bill to give those 70 years of age and older specific property tax relief on their residence. Your vote for me, Michael Nance, will give you a strong voice in Carson City.
